A short drive South of the Jamestown Settlement along the Colonial Parkway lies Historic Jamestowne, the original site of Jamestown, where English settlers landed in 1607. Known as "America's Birthplace," Jamestown functioned as the capital of Virginia from 1607-99. Historic Jamestowne features archeological interpretive areas (including the James Fort excavation), guided tours, the year-round Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center with multimedia presentations and exhibits, boat ride, and hiking and biking paths. Don't miss a chance to view unearthed artifacts in the Nathalie P. and Alan M. Voorhees Archaearium, view costumed glassblowers at the Glasshouse and take the scenic Island Drive. Enjoy a casual lunch at the Dale House Cafe, which overlooks the James River.
Historic Jamestowne is operated jointly by the National Park Service and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Open daily (except Christmas and New Year's days), Historic Jamestowne hosts several annual events such as Jamestown Day in May and Bacon's Rebellion Weekend in September.
Historic Jamestowne is open daily from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. (Visitor Center opens at 9 AM). From Williamsburg, take the Colonial Parkway to Jamestown (approximately 9 miles).
