Established in 1957, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum was the first United States museum devoted to American folk art. The museum features an extensive collection of folk art - from paintings, woodcarvings, quilts and pottery to weathervanes and toys - some of which date to the early 18th century.
Popular exhibits at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum include "Introduction to American Folk Art," "We the People: Three Centuries of American Folk Portraits," "Exciting Expressions: Painted Furniture," "Conserving the Carolina Room," "Inspiration and Ingenuity: American Stoneware," "Down on the Farm," "In Memoriam: Mourning Art in Early America," "We See America," "Cross Rhythms: Folk Musical Instruments," Scenes of Everyday Life: The Drawings of Lewis Miller" and "Stars: American Quilts and Coverlets."
The museum's gift shop, Sign of the Rooster, sells eclectic collectibles, woodcarvings and folk art books. The Museum Cafe is open for lunch and serves sandwiches, soups and tasty desserts.
