In the spring of 1607, North America's first permanent English-speaking colony was established along the banks of the James River in Virginia. Learn all about the adventurous spirit of these early colonists, their triumphs and struggles, at the Jamestown Settlement. Climb aboard full-scale replicas of the 3 merchant ships (Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery) that took the colonists to the " New World" and stroll through the re-created fort and Powhatan Indian Village. The indoor museum complex features a 20-minute film, “1607: A Nation Takes Root ,” and three large exhibit galleries: The English Gallery, Powhatan Indian Gallery and Jamestown Gallery. A short drive South of Jamestown Settlement living-history museum along the Colonial Parkway lies Historic Jamestowne, the original site of Jamestown, which includes archeological interpretive areas, a visitor center, boat ride, and hiking and biking paths.
