Berkeley Plantation

Billed as “ America’s most historic plantation,” Berkeley Plantation was the site of the first official Thanksgiving in 1619 and the birthplace of both Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his son, William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States. In addition, “Taps” was composed at Berkeley Plantation when the mansion served as headquarters for Union General George McClellan in 1862. In 1907, Berkeley Plantation was purchased by Jon Jamieson, a drummer boy in McClellan's army and today is home to his great grandson. Take a guided tour of the 1726 Georgian mansion, which is furnished with rare period antiques.
