Built in 1730, this Georgian-style house served as the home of Thomas Nelson, Jr. (1738-89), a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A brigadier general, Nelson also led the Virginia militia during the siege of Yorktown. The Nelson House, which served as a hospital for both sides during the Civil War, has been extensively restored by the National Park Service, which acquired it in 1968.
