Built in 1613, Shirley is the oldest plantation in Virginia and the oldest family-owned business in North America. General Robert E. Lee’s mother, Anne Hill Carter, was born and got married at Shirley Plantation, which also served as a Civil War field hospital for the Union Army. Take a guided tour of this National Historic Landmark, which features original woodwork, furniture, portraits and silver, as well as a famous “flying” staircase and numerous interesting outbuildings. Shirley Plantation is located 35 miles Northwest of Williamsburg. It is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM.
